InZOI's next major update, scheduled for September 2026, is shaping up to be less about flashy additions and more about fixing what's broken under the hood. Director and Producer Hyungjun "Kjun" Kim laid out the priorities in two developer letters this week, acknowledging that the team's focus on pushing new content had caused previously working systems to degrade over time.

The headline commitment: a ground-up redesign of the autonomy system, which governs how Zois decide what to do on their own.

Stability over spectacle

Kjun was unusually direct about the state of things. Zois that once followed routines naturally have started ignoring bedtimes or repeating irrelevant actions. Family interactions have grown erratic. Rather than layering more patches onto the existing autonomy logic, the team is rebuilding the system structurally.

"It may look like there is less new content on the surface," Kjun wrote, "but behind the scenes, we are doing important work to make inZOI more stable and reliable for the future."

The update will also incorporate high-priority fixes from the community's FF (feedback/feature) list. For players who have been reporting persistent behavioral bugs since InZOI's early access period, this is the response they were waiting for. It echoes a pattern we've seen across the life-sim space this year, where Paralives also chose to prioritize stability and free updates over rapid feature expansion after its own early access launch.

Create-A-Zoi gets a DNA system and family trees

The update's most substantial new feature is bringing InZOI's in-game DNA system into Create-A-Zoi. Players will be able to select two created Zois and mix their genetics repeatedly until they produce a desired child of any age group younger than the parents. A single-parent variant is also included, generating offspring from one Zoi's features combined with randomized DNA from an absent second parent.

Alongside DNA mixing, a family tree interface is being added to Create-A-Zoi so relationships between household members can be properly organized before entering the game. This should address a long-standing gap for players building multi-generational families from scratch.

Active Mode and restaurants

Active Mode, first shown in June with a Zoi wielding a frying pan, is arriving as an "Experimental Feature." Kjun framed the decision carefully: the team debated whether physical confrontation belongs in a life sim at all, but ultimately decided that a wider action set allows for more player-driven storytelling. Guardrails are planned, including fight-ending conditions and integration with the police system. Police in InZOI will carry tasers only, not firearms.

New fighting animations differentiate experienced fighters from untrained Zois, and the police taser interaction is being developed as part of the same confrontation framework.

The restaurant system is also getting a full rework. Groups of customers can now arrive together, sit at available tables, order from a waiter, and receive meals prepared by a chef with streamlined cooking times. Existing unused restaurant buildings in the cities will be renovated to use this functionality. The main content pillars of the September update, per Kjun, are city travel, resorts, and restaurants.

Smaller additions in the pipeline

The developer diary showed a range of work-in-progress items beyond the major systems:

  • Photo mode will auto-activate during "take a photo" interactions, with the expressions and posing toolbar appearing automatically
  • The Browse Mods UI in the main menu is being overhauled for easier navigation
  • Couples can now sleep while cuddling
  • Infant walking animations are being improved based on feedback
  • A fatal shark attack animation is being produced for scuba diving
  • Anime-style full head masks are being added to the hats category
  • New hairstyles, locations, and objects for future content are in development

InZOI heads to Shanghai

Kjun also announced that InZOI has been invited to 2026 TapTap, an offline gaming event running September 12 to 13 at the West Bund Art Center in Shanghai. The event will feature playable demos and developer meet-and-greets. For InZOI, it represents a first in-person introduction to the Chinese player base, a market Krafton has been eyeing as part of the game's regional expansion. More details about the studio's plans for the event are expected next week.

This follows InZOI's broader strategy of building its audience region by region while the PC version matures. The PS5 version was pushed to the first half of 2027 earlier this summer for similar reasons: the team wants to get the foundation right before widening the platform base.
