InZOI's September 2026 update is shaping up to be one of the game's most significant patches yet, with Director and Producer Hyungjun "Kjun" Kim sharing detailed plans across two developer letters this week. The update brings a DNA system to Create-A-Zoi, a full restaurant overhaul, experimental combat mechanics, and a ground-up redesign of how Zois behave autonomously.
Here is everything revealed so far.
DNA mixing and family trees in Create-A-Zoi
The in-game DNA system is being brought into Create-A-Zoi, letting players mix the genetics of two created Zois to generate offspring. You can keep rolling results until you get a child you like, and the system supports any age group younger than the parents. A single-parent option is also included, pairing one designed Zoi's DNA with randomized genetics from a second parent.
Alongside this, a new family tree prompt is being added so relationships can be properly organized and connected before you even enter the game world. For players who like to plan multigenerational households from the start, these two features together fill a gap that has been requested since early access launched.
Active Mode combat arrives as an experimental feature
The fighting system teased back in June (the frying-pan clip) is coming in September, but Kjun was careful to frame it. "Active Mode isn't intended to be a feature focused simply on violence," he wrote. "It is content we've been preparing to offer experiences that you normally wouldn't expect from the traditional life simulation genre."
The team debated internally whether direct player-controlled combat belonged in a life sim at all. Their compromise: release it as an Experimental Feature, gather feedback, and iterate. There is still work to do on fight-ending conditions and how the police system responds. On that note, a new animation shows police officers drawing tasers during confrontations. Kjun clarified that all InZOI police will carry tasers only, not firearms.
Experienced Zois will also get a "more sophisticated" fighting animation compared to untrained ones, adding a layer of character history to how brawls play out.
Restaurant system rebuilt for group dining
Restaurants have been a sore point. Kjun admitted that managing Zois through specific action sequences was "extremely difficult," and that cooking interactions took so long the businesses never felt lively.
The new system changes the flow: groups of customers arrive and sit together, place orders with a waiter, and a chef prepares dishes on a streamlined cooking timer separate from the normal cooking system. The waiter serves food, customers eat, pay, and leave. Existing unused restaurant lots around the cities will be renovated to use the new functionality.
Kjun specifically mentioned enjoying restaurants "together with your family, partner, and friends," suggesting player-controlled Zois can dine out as a social activity, not just run the business.
Autonomy overhaul and fewer new features
Perhaps the most important change is one players will feel rather than see. Kjun acknowledged that the autonomy engine, one of InZOI's most critical systems, has degraded over successive updates. Zois stopped following sleep schedules, repeated irrelevant actions, and displayed odd family dynamics.
Rather than patching individual quirks, the team is redesigning autonomy from the ground up. That means fewer new features in this update, but more stable, natural behavior going forward. Bug fixes drawn from the community's FF (feedback and fixes) list are also a priority.
"It may look like there is less new content on the surface," Kjun wrote, "but behind the scenes, we are doing important work to make inZOI more stable and reliable for the future."
Everything else in the pipeline
The developer diary also revealed a batch of smaller additions:
- A fatal shark attack animation while scuba diving, adding a new death type
- Couples can now sleep while cuddling
- Improved infant walking animations based on player feedback
- Photo mode now activates automatically when using a "take a photo" interaction, with the expressions and posing toolbar appearing by default
- A Browse Mods UI overhaul for easier navigation
- Anime-style full head masks added to the hats category
- New hairstyles, locations, and objects flagged as "future content"
TapTap Shanghai in September
Kjun also announced that InZOI has been invited to 2026 TapTap, an offline gaming event taking place September 12 to 13 at the West Bund Art Center in Shanghai. The team will demo the game and meet Chinese players in person. More details are expected next Wednesday.
The September update's main pillars are city travel, resorts, and restaurants, with the autonomy rebuild running underneath. For a game that delayed its PS5 version to the first half of 2027 to get the fundamentals right, this pattern of slowing down to fix core systems rather than stacking new content feels deliberate.
No exact release date for the September update has been given, but Kjun's letters suggest it is only weeks away.
