What is The Sims 4
The Sims 4 is a life simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It launched on PC on September 2, 2014, came to Mac on February 17, 2015, and arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 17, 2017. On October 18, 2022, EA made the base game free to download on all platforms.
Players create and control virtual people called Sims, guiding them through careers, relationships, and personal milestones. The game introduced an emotion system where a Sim's mood shapes the actions and social interactions available to them, adding a layer of personality to everyday routines.
Create a Sim and Build Mode
Create a Sim lets you shape your Sims by clicking and dragging directly on their face and body. Individual features can be adjusted across eight life stages, from infant to elder.
Build Mode uses a room-based approach that lets you resize, move, and duplicate entire rooms. The Sims 4 was the first game in the series to offer three wall-height settings, and the toolset has grown through free updates over the years. An online Gallery lets players share and download Sims, rooms, and full lots created by others.
Packs and add-on content
The Sims 4 organizes its downloadable content into four tiers. Expansion packs are the largest, adding new worlds, gameplay systems, and life events. The most recent is Royalty & Legacy, the twenty-first expansion pack, which launched on February 12, 2026 and introduces dynasties, noble titles, and royal scandals. Twelve game packs offer focused themes such as Vampires, Werewolves, and Parenthood. Stuff packs provide themed furniture and clothing collections, and kits are the smallest category, each built around a single concept. The in-game Marketplace also hosts Maker Packs, community-created content drops that include both free and paid sets.
