The Sims 4 Update 2.38 is live on all platforms as of August 25, dropping during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The patch introduces a Marketplace image cache for faster browsing, free base game content including size-inclusive clothing and a new afro-textured hairstyle, and a fix for a top PlayStation crash that hit players during game launch.
Marketplace image cache
The headline technical addition is an image cache that stores Marketplace thumbnails locally. On repeat visits, your game pulls images from disk instead of re-downloading them, which should cut load times when browsing or checking out Maker Packs.
A few details worth knowing:
- The cache has a 250 MB upper limit, though Maxis says actual usage will usually be lower.
- It auto-cleans 14 days after your last Marketplace visit, removing unused images.
- PC and Mac players can find the cache at
Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\onlinethumbnailcache. - If Marketplace images start acting up, open the cheat console and run
clearonlinethumbnailcache true.
Console players get the same performance benefit but can't manually access the cache folder.
Free CAS content: size-inclusive fashion and afro hair
This patch adds 6 new Create a Sim items designed to work across all body shapes, including a dress, tops, jeans, a cardigan, a shirt, and slacks. Five new Styled Looks use these pieces, and 5 new Starter Sims showcase them in CAS and on the Gallery.
Alongside the clothing, there's a new afro-textured hairstyle inspired by natural hair sculpting. Maxis describes it as a "whimsical, cosmic" look built for main-character energy. Both additions are free base game content available now.
Mean Girls and Clueless kits on August 27
Two Capsule Kits were announced alongside the patch: The Sims 4 Mean Girls Capsule Kit and The Sims 4 Clueless Capsule Kit. The Mean Girls kit pulls from Y2K glam, while the Clueless kit leans into 90s plaid and trendsetting silhouettes. Both arrive on August 27. Bug fixes and console stability
The patch addresses a top-reported PlayStation crash that occurred during game launch. Maxis specifically thanked PS players who submitted reports through the PlayStation crash reporting system.
Other fixes:
- Marketplace page layouts now display correctly when entering from CAS after a Quick Buy pack install.
- Right Stick scrolling no longer gets stuck when browsing the Marketplace from CAS (console).
- Right Stick scrolling no longer gets stuck on Pack Details pages in the Marketplace (console).
Small list, but the PlayStation crash fix alone should make a difference for players who had trouble getting past the title screen.
