A new generation of Sims

The Sims 2 was developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts on September 14, 2004 for PC, with a Mac version following in 2005. Console versions arrived on PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, and PlayStation Portable. The sequel moved the series into full 3D with a rotatable camera and shipped with three pre-made neighborhoods: Pleasantview, Strangetown, and Veronaville.

Aging, genetics, and aspirations

Sims in The Sims 2 age through distinct life stages, from baby and toddler through child, teenager, adult, and elder. The University expansion added a young adult stage between teen and adult. A genetics system means children inherit traits like eye color, hair color, and facial structure from their parents, with dominant and recessive genes determining which features appear. Each Sim also has an aspiration such as Family, Romance, Knowledge, Popularity, or Fortune that shapes their wants and fears, a rolling set of short-term goals and anxieties that drive daily gameplay.

Expansion packs and stuff packs

Eight expansion packs were released between 2005 and 2008: University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, FreeTime, and Apartment Life. Ten stuff packs added themed objects and clothing throughout the same period. In February 2025, EA re-released the game as The Sims 2: Legacy Collection on Steam, the EA App, and the Epic Games Store. The Legacy Collection bundles the base game with all eight expansions and nine of the ten stuff packs, with IKEA Home Stuff omitted due to expired licensing.
