What changed from the original

Where the first game treated life as a static loop, The Sims 2 introduced aging. Sims move through distinct life stages: baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult, and elder. Each stage brings new interactions, needs, and milestones. Your Sims grow up, grow old, and eventually die.

The aspiration system gives each Sim a driving motivation. The base game includes five aspirations: Family, Fortune, Knowledge, Romance, and Popularity. A Sim's aspiration shapes their wants and fears, a dynamic tracker that rewards you for pursuing goals and punishes you for letting fears come true. A Knowledge Sim wants to stargaze and earn skill points. A Romance Sim wants dates and dreads commitment. Fulfill enough wants and your Sim enters a platinum mood. Ignore them and they spiral into aspiration failure, complete with a visit from the Sim Therapist.

Genetics that actually work

The Sims 2 introduced a proper genetics system. Eye color, hair color, skin tone, and facial features all follow dominant and recessive inheritance. Children look like their parents, and family resemblances carry through generations. No other game in the franchise has matched this system.

Create-a-Sim gave players direct control over facial bone structure for the first time, along with hairstyles, clothing, and personality traits. Combined with the genetics, each new generation of Sims looks distinct but related to their parents and grandparents.

Three neighborhoods, three stories

The base game ships with three pre-made neighborhoods, each with its own cast and ongoing storylines:

Pleasantview picks up where the original game left off. The Goth family, the Pleasants, and the Dreamers are all here, older and dealing with new problems. Bella Goth is missing. The Caliente sisters have moved in.

Strangetown is a desert town full of aliens, mad scientists, and military conspiracies. The Curious brothers keep getting abducted. General Buzz Grunt has a grudge. Olive Specter's yard has an unusual number of graves.

Veronaville draws from Shakespeare. The Capps and Montys are feuding, star-crossed teens are sneaking around, and someone is going to get their heart broken.

Each neighborhood is a self-contained sandbox. You can play them as intended, ignore the backstory entirely, or build your own neighborhood from scratch.

Where to play it now

The Sims 2: Legacy Collection is available on Steam, the EA App, and the Epic Games Store for $29.99. It bundles the base game with all 17 expansion and stuff packs, including University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, and FreeTime. The collection runs on Windows 10 and 11.

System requirements are modest: an Intel i3-3220 or equivalent processor, 4 GB RAM, a GTX 600 series or equivalent GPU, and 17 GB of storage.
