The eighth and final expansion pack for The Sims 2, Apartment Life added urban living, witchcraft, and a social class system to the game. Developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts, it launched on August 26, 2008 for Windows. It closed out The Sims 2's expansion lineup with some of the series' most ambitious new mechanics, earning a Metacritic score of 75.

Apartment living

For the first time in The Sims 2, multiple playable families could share a single lot. Up to four households can live in the same apartment building, each occupying their own unit. Rent varies based on apartment size, interior layout, and outdoor patio space. Sims can search for roommates to help split the cost.

Every apartment building comes with a landlord NPC who handles daytime maintenance, fixing broken objects and keeping common areas in shape. The apartment system was a real technical challenge for Maxis, since the engine had never supported multiple player-controlled families on one lot before.

Witches

Apartment Life introduced witches as a new life state. Sims learn magic from existing witch NPCs in the neighborhood and can eventually become witches themselves, gaining the ability to cast spells, brew potions, and fly on broomsticks.

Witch alignment runs on a spectrum with seven tiers, from Infallibly Good to Atrociously Evil. Players can direct their witch Sims to study good, neutral, or evil magic, and alignment shifts through both spellcasting and study. Good and evil witches wear distinct outfits and tend to clash with witches on the opposite end of the spectrum. Maxis reportedly drew on research into real-world magic communities while building the system.

Reputation and social classes

Two interconnected systems changed how Sims relate to their neighbors.

The reputation system tracks whether a Sim is known as nice or mean based on their social interactions, with tangible gameplay benefits for good reputations and penalties for bad ones.

The social class system tags lots as low, middle, or high based on property value, neighborhood density, and the value of surrounding buildings. New social group townies roam the neighborhood to reflect this hierarchy: Gearheads, Bohemians, Jocks, Techs, and Socialites, each tied to a different socioeconomic tier.

Belladonna Cove

The pack ships with Belladonna Cove, the largest premade neighborhood in The Sims 2. Inspired by New York City, it spans 49 lots across distinct districts: slums, a trailer park, an industrial zone, a Central Park area, the city core, suburbs, a modern district, and the Hills where the wealthiest Sims reside.

Eleven pre-made families populate the neighborhood. Business tycoon Armand DeBateau lives with his adopted teenage daughter Tara after divorcing Jessica Peterson. Roommates Gabriel Green and Chastity Gere are childhood best friends living together despite their differences. Widower Timothy Riley is raising his daughter Sally on his own. With 14 apartment lots, 19 residential lots, and 16 community lots, Belladonna Cove offered the most varied starting point of any Sims 2 neighborhood.

Soundtrack

The in-game radio featured Simlish recordings from Katy Perry, Good Charlotte, Tally Hall, Does It Offend You Yeah?, and then-16-year-old Gabriella Cilmi.
