Alien roots and family loss
The Caliente family tree is one of the strangest in The Sims 2. Dina and Nina are twin daughters of Flamenco and Nighat Caliente. Their mother's side traces back to the Al Mahmoud family, giving the sisters Arab heritage. Their father's side takes a much stranger path: their grandfather Nestor Caliente was abducted by Pollination Technician 7, and Flamenco was born from that alien encounter. Despite being one-quarter alien, neither twin shows any visible extraterrestrial traits. Even the family name holds a clue. "Caliente" means "hot" in Spanish, and it contains the hidden word "alien."
Tragedy shaped the sisters long before they reached Pleasantview. Their mother Nighat died when the twins were still children, and Flamenco raised them alone until his own death of old age when they were adults. Before the game begins, Dina married the elderly Michael Bachelor, older brother of Bella Goth. Michael also died of old age, and Dina inherited money from him. The twins then moved to Pleasantview, arriving at 170 Main Street with just §1,040 between them and no jobs.
The night Bella vanished
The household bio for The Sims 2 poses the question directly: "Was it just coincidence that the Caliente sisters arrived on the eve of Bella's disappearance? And is their interest in Mortimer physical... or fiscal?"
The timing is suspicious enough on its own, but the alien connection deepens the mystery. Bella Goth was abducted by aliens, and the Caliente sisters have an alien relative in Pollination Technician 7. Players have long theorized that the family's extraterrestrial ties are somehow linked to Bella's fate, though the game never confirms or denies it.
What the game does confirm is Dina's ambitions. She starts in love with Mortimer Goth, the wealthiest Sim in Pleasantview and Bella's recently abandoned husband. She has the Fortune aspiration, and the game's tutorial message is blunt: "Dina Caliente's digging for gold, and she wants to lay a claim on Mortimer! Don't wait for him to make the big move! Be aggressive!" Lead Producer Jonathan Knight characterized the Caliente sisters as "two young gold-diggers."
Opposites sharing the same secrets
Despite being twins, Dina and Nina have completely inverted personalities. Dina is outgoing, playful, and sloppy. Nina is shy, serious, and neat. In The Sims 2, zodiac signs reflect personality rather than birth date, so the sisters even have different signs: Dina is a Sagittarius while Nina is not.
Both sisters are romantically involved with their next-door neighbor Don Lothario, apparently without the other's knowledge. Nina is Don's lover. Dina has a crush on him and her memories reveal she kissed Don and had an affair with him while still married to Michael Bachelor. Don, meanwhile, is also engaged to Cassandra Goth, Mortimer's daughter, making the web of connections between the Caliente and Goth families almost impossibly tangled.
Dina's memories tell a complicated story of their own. She has a positive memory of falling in love with Michael and a positive memory of inheriting his money after his death. Whether her marriage was a genuine romance cut short by old age or a calculated move remains one of the details players get to decide for themselves.
