The Sims 4's July 21 update is one week out, and the development team just answered dozens of player questions in a Discord Q&A. Producer Morgan, Designer Conor, and Engineers Mike and Dmitrii covered how AutoSave actually works, what Memory Boost does for corrupted saves, and the handful of fixes tucked into the patch. Here is what they confirmed.
We previously covered the initial announcement of AutoSave and Memory Boost when the laundry list dropped earlier today. The Q&A fills in the mechanical details that announcement left open.
AutoSave uses a separate slot and works in Build Mode
AutoSave creates its own dedicated save slot rather than overwriting your manual save. That distinction matters: if something goes wrong, your last manual save stays intact.
The feature is fully customizable on PC and Mac. You can set how often it triggers, and you can turn it off entirely. Console players already had a form of AutoSave, but this update gives them the improved version with frequency settings. Console players cannot fully disable it, only adjust timing.
Save Reminder is a separate, new system. When triggered, it saves over your last manual slot, the same way pressing "Save" yourself would. It can be turned off on all platforms. The reminders are delivered by a gnome character with rotating messages written by designer Conor, described by Morgan as having "Press the Red Button" energy.
Both AutoSave and Save Reminder work while you are in Build Mode, which is a direct response to players who spend hours building without saving.
Memory Boost is now mandatory and removes old limitations
After this patch, Memory Boost will be permanently on for every player on every platform. There is no toggle to disable it. The separate executable file (TS4_x64_fpb.exe) that previously caused antivirus conflicts is being retired. Going forward, only TS4_x64.exe will exist.
Two technical restrictions are gone:
- Memory Boost no longer requires DirectX 11. DX9 players get it too.
- It works in every mode on Mac, including alongside Game Mode.
Engineer Dmitrii described the feature's effects as "reduced lag, improved frame rates and responsiveness, shorter loading times, and a lower risk of memory-related crashes." The team also confirmed reports of reduced loading times in some cases.
For players on lower-end hardware, Dmitrii said there is nothing to watch out for, and expressed hope they would see performance improvements.
Corrupted saves and residential rentals
The most interesting part of the Q&A for long-term players: Memory Boost can, in some cases, allow previously corrupted saves to load again. Engineer Dmitrii confirmed the team ran experiments where saves that were "previously considered corrupted" opened successfully with Memory Boost enabled. Not all of them recovered, but the success rate improved.
The corruption connection ties to how the game handles protobuffs. Overstuffed lots push protobuff sizes up, and at a certain point the game fails to load them. Memory Boost helps the game manage that overhead.
On residential rentals specifically, Morgan confirmed the team did extensive testing with the default in-game limit (around 8 rental units across all lots) and feels confident that number is safe. The cheat to bypass the 99-rental cap was removed in a previous patch. Morgan's advice: "do things in moderation," and avoid stacking maximum Sims, overstuffed lots, and high rental counts simultaneously.
For saves already reduced to 9 KB (a known corruption symptom), Dmitrii was less optimistic: "9 kilobytes doesn't sound very promising."
Other fixes in the patch
- A retroactive fix for disappearing roofs that will repair old saves where the bug occurred.
- Three new swatches for the City Living YumCooker (Used) oven, matching updates previously made to the base game version.
- A Nordhaven festival notification toggle in the options menu, letting players silence those alerts. The team noted this was simple to add because the notifications already existed. A similar toggle for Sulani festivals would require building notifications from scratch.
- Autonomy improvements are in progress, based on player feedback, but were not detailed further.
What this does not fix
Morgan acknowledged that 3x speed lag is still under investigation and Memory Boost is not expected to resolve it. Saving in CAS remains impossible because CAS and Build Mode use different save flows. Longer main menu loading times were not addressed. And no graphics improvements for high-end systems are planned.
The update launches July 21 for PC, Mac, and consoles.
