Callia Maebey, the wide-eyed, phone-gripping Sim who first appeared on The Sims 4 main menu in April 2022, is back. The Sims Team dropped an entire blog post devoted to her lore on June 29, confirming that she's returning to the main menu alongside the June 30 patch that, among other things, tones down the game's excessive phone notifications.
Yes, the Sim originally designed to teach you how to use the phone is making her comeback in the same update that fixes phone spam. The Sims Team is aware of the irony.
From "Phone Lady" to community icon
According to the official blog post, Callia was known internally as "Phone Lady" before she ever had a name. A producer pitched five options: Cellia Phone, Roman Chargess, Talia Faunn, Canya Herm茅, and Callia Maebey. The vote was unanimous.
She was originally created as part of an onboarding exercise for prospective new hires at The Sims, then repurposed as a main menu tutorial prompt for the phone feature. That might have been the end of it, except players took one look at her signature wide-eyed stare and gaping smile and decided she was deeply unsettling. One of the artists who designed her confirmed the look was inspired by the "overly attached girlfriend" meme, a resemblance the team says goes beyond just the appearance.
The Sims Team considered removing Callia entirely. Instead, they leaned into it with a belated April Fools' prank in April 2022, letting her take over the entire main menu with the message: "you didn't call me but I'm here."
Death, dating shows, and drama
Callia's story only got stranger from there. She canonically died after her main menu takeover, then showed up as a ghost photobombing Ash Harjo in a photo booth during the High School Years reveal trailer in July 2022. She eventually returned to the living, though the Sims Team won't say how.
By July 2024, she was starring in a reality dating show introduced with The Sims 4 Lovestruck, where she dated four contestants including vampire Caleb Vatore. Caleb won her rose after a graveyard date and some coffin WooHoo, then rejected her to kiss Kyle Kyleson instead. Shortly after, an anonymous Social Bunny account leaked texts suggesting Caleb had been seeing other Sims behind Kyle's back. Kyle broke things off with Caleb and started dating Callia. The two moved in together.
The blog post stops just short of calling it revenge, but the implication is not subtle.
She was behind the phone spam all along
The new blog post also confirms what longtime players might have suspected: Callia Maebey was the mysterious earbud peddler responsible for all those unwanted phone calls your Sims kept receiving. The June 30 update includes tuning for excessive calls and notifications based on the 12 most upvoted community reports on the EA forums, so the calls are going away, but the blog post notes that Callia is still using those earbuds to listen in.
She also apparently pivoted into a Simfluencer career on Social Bunny, where anyone who questioned her rise to fame found themselves cancelled by conveniently exposed information.
The blog post ends with a tease: "What could she be planning next? Starting tomorrow, June 30, 2026, go take a look at The Sims 4 Main Menu."
If you haven't opened the game since the update, it might be worth checking the main menu to see what she's up to this time. Just don't answer your phone.
