The Sims 4 is getting an autosave system on July 21, arriving as part of a free update that addresses one of the community's oldest and most persistent requests. The feature lands nearly 12 years after the game's 2014 launch.
Until now, a crash or unexpected shutdown could wipe out hours of gameplay with no recovery option. Given how much of The Sims 4 revolves around emergent stories and one-off events, recreating lost progress is often impossible. The new system aims to fix that by generating save points automatically during play.
How the autosave triggers work
According to Ubergizmo's report, the autosave activates during three types of gameplay moments:
- Lot transitions, the game saves when your Sim travels between locations.
- Gameplay milestones, specific in-game achievements or events trigger a save.
- Time intervals, the system saves after extended stretches of active play without a manual save.
Both the frequency of automatic saves and which triggers are active can be configured in the game settings.
Players who prefer manual saves get reminders instead
For anyone who wants full control over their save files (rotational players managing multiple households, for example), the autosave system can be switched off entirely. In its place, the update adds customizable reminders that prompt you to save manually at intervals you define. EA confirmed that reminder timing is also adjustable through settings.
Part of a larger patch cycle
The July 21 update includes more than autosave. EA has outlined performance fixes and save-corruption repairs in the same patch. A separate update planned for September will focus on Sim autonomy, aiming to make character actions more consistent and responsive. Details on that second patch are expected in the coming weeks.
The autosave addition follows a string of recent quality-of-life improvements, including the ability to silence your Sim's phone added in the June 30 update.
