What the expansion adds
SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow takes the 2013 SimCity into the near future with new buildings, transport, and city systems. Released on November 12, 2013, the expansion lets players choose between two paths for their cities: a clean technology utopia driven by research and wealthy residents, or a resource-hungry mega corporation that relies on a low-wealth workforce and heavy industry. Both paths introduce new buildings, resources, and gameplay loops that change how a city grows and earns revenue.
The expansion is compatible with regions that include players using the base game without the expansion installed.
MegaTowers and vertical growth
MegaTowers are the centerpiece of Cities of Tomorrow. These enormous structures let players build upward instead of outward, adding sections over time for different purposes: apartments for housing, schools for education, malls for shopping, and indoor parks for recreation. Standard MegaTowers serve low to medium-wealth populations, while Elite MegaTowers cater to medium and high-wealth residents. Skybridges connect adjacent MegaTowers, linking their populations and services.
OmegaCo, the Academy, and new resources
Two new city specializations anchor the expansion's economy. OmegaCo produces a resource called Omega, which can be used to convert existing facilities into franchises. This path generates significant income but comes with severe pollution. The Academy introduces ControlNet, a resource distributed through signal transmission that powers research and clean technology options. Players can lean into one specialization or try to balance both.
Drones, MagLev, and disasters
Service drones replace traditional emergency vehicles in futuristic cities, handling police, fire, and medical responses as well as deliveries. MagLev transit rises above city streets and smaller buildings, offering a new mass transit option. The expansion also adds a unique disaster: a giant robot attack, fitting for a city built on advanced technology.
Cities of Tomorrow is available on PC and Mac and requires the SimCity (2013) base game.
