Monster Fantasy is an upcoming action RPG from developer Jotoyo that blends monster hunting with life-sim activities and creature taming. The game's Steam page is already live, and a Kickstarter campaign is set to launch on July 15.

The pitch is straightforward: take the boss-hunting loop of Monster Hunter, mix in the daily routines of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, then add a creature-collecting layer inspired by Pok茅mon. Jotoyo says the goal is to make these systems feel interconnected rather than just stacked next to each other.

Hunt, tame, ride

Players arrive in the Kingdom of Eldoras as an amnesiac hero and choose from four combat classes: Warrior, Mage, Archer, or Martial Artist. Around 50 giant monsters roam the world, each with distinct behavior patterns you need to learn to exploit.

Defeated monsters can be tamed as pets, trained to evolve, and eventually ridden as mounts across valleys, rainforests, icy plains, and volcanic regions. Flying mounts are also on the table.

The cozy side

If hunting isn't your mood for the day, Monster Fantasy offers a full slate of life-sim activities. Fishing, mining, wood chopping, cooking, and equipment crafting are all present. You can build out your home and befriend roughly 100 villagers, each with their own personality and interests.

The developers describe it as a game you can play at your own pace, whether that means chasing down the next big hunt or spending an afternoon decorating your house.

Co-op and platform details

Monster Fantasy supports online co-op and LAN co-op, so you can hunt alongside friends. It's currently confirmed for Windows 11 (64-bit), with no release date announced yet. The Steam listing notes support for 10 languages including English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and several European languages.

One unusual detail from the Steam page: Jotoyo is experimenting with an optional AI-powered NPC conversation system using large language models, separate from the hand-crafted dialogue. They haven't committed to including it in the final release.

Worth watching?

For life-sim fans who also enjoy combat-heavy games, Monster Fantasy sits in an interesting space. The genre blend isn't new (games like Paralives show how much appetite there is for fresh takes on the life-sim formula), but the scale Jotoyo is promising is ambitious for an indie studio running a Kickstarter. The campaign going live July 15 will be the first real test of whether the community is on board.
