What Livin' Large adds
Livin' Large is the first expansion pack for The Sims, developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Released on August 29, 2000 in North America and September 8, 2000 in Europe (where it was titled The Sims: Livin' It Up), the expansion introduces 125 new Buy Mode objects, five career paths, and several non-player characters that went on to become series staples.
Interactive objects
The expansion's standout content is its interactive objects. The genie lamp summons a genie who offers wishes with unpredictable results that can just as easily backfire on the wishing Sim. The chemistry set lets Sims brew potions while building logic skill, with effects ranging from helpful to transforming the drinker into a monster. Servo, a household robot priced at 15,000 simoleons, handles cooking, cleaning, gardening, and repairs, making it the most expensive item in the game. Other notable additions include the Vibromatic Heart Bed and a pet guinea pig capable of transmitting a fatal illness.
Non-player characters
Two memorable NPCs arrive with Livin' Large. The Grim Reaper appears when a Sim dies, and other household members can plead for the departed Sim's life through a game of rock, paper, scissors. Win and the Sim is revived; lose and they may be removed from the game or return as a zombie. The Tragic Clown shows up uninvited to perform failed tricks that drag down the household mood. The only ways to get rid of him are to raise the household mood or set his painting on fire.
Career paths and neighborhood content
Five new career tracks give Sims more professional options: Slacker, Hacker, Journalist, Paranormal, and Musician. The expansion also increases the number of default lots available in the neighborhood.
