Downtown and community lots

Hot Date introduced community lots to The Sims for the first time, giving players a reason to take their Sims beyond the home lot. The expansion added a new Downtown neighborhood containing ten lots with restaurants, shops, parks, and beachfront areas. Sims call a taxi to travel Downtown, where they can meet Townie NPCs, share meals at restaurants, and go on dates across the various venues.

Townies are non-playable characters who populate Downtown lots. Most are randomly generated, but a handful appear as preset archetypes such as the Flirt, the Partier, and the Wallflower. Miss Crumplebottom, one of the series' most memorable NPCs, patrols Downtown and smacks Sims with her purse when they attempt romantic interactions in public.

Dual relationship system

Hot Date replaced the original single relationship bar with two separate meters: one for short-term feelings and one for long-term connection. The short-term bar fluctuates based on recent interactions, while the long-term bar shifts more gradually over time. Social availability became mood-dependent, and a "three strikes" rule means repeating the same interaction more than twice in a short span leads to rejection.

The expansion also added over 40 new social interactions, including hugs, kisses, nagging, and insults. Eight new interest topics such as romance, politics, and art gave Sims more conversation options during dates and everyday socializing.

New objects and build tools

Hot Date shipped with over 125 new objects, from picnic baskets and lover's swings to restaurant furniture and date-ready decor. The expansion also introduced ceiling item placement for the first time in the series, expanding build mode options for player-designed lots.
